The SAULT Forum is a
regional network which aims to support dialogue
and collaboration for the development of teaching and learning in
higher education in Southern Africa

'Region' of Southern Africa is defined as including
the following countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South
Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Aims
Within higher education institutions in the Region (as defined above), the SAULT Forum aims to:

1. promote interaction and collaboration
among members for the purpose of the development of teaching and learning
2. support research into teaching,
student learning, higher education policy relevant specifically to the context
of the Region
3. support
the emergence of new national educational/academic development networks in
every country.
4. facilitate access to the network of educational and academic
development experts in the theory and practice of educational development in HE
internationally.

The SAULT Forum will:

· hold regional meetings and conferences-
annually in the first instance
· support dialogue through virtual on-line
spaces, such as blogs and web-site, about the improvement of teaching and
learning
· make available documents, papers, and
multi-media materials in support of the development of teaching and learning
· share opportunities for applying for
research grants, conferences, exchanges etc
· facilitate exchange of materials between
countries
Affiliations
The SAULT Forum is a non-political network, independent of any national government. The SAULT Forum is affiliated to the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (Heltasa) and the International Consortium for Educational Development (ICED). There are no membership fees.

Member Activities
These may include (but not restricted to) physical meetings, seminars, conferences, and on-line web-site(s), e-mail communication lists, webinars, blogs, discussion forums, on-line debates and meetings.

Membership
Membership of
the SAULT Forum is open to any person who meets the following two criteria:
(a) is
employed full-time or part-time in a higher education institution or research
centre within the region
(b) has the
development of teaching and learning in higher education as a component of
their professional role (for example, as a lecturer, academic developer,
researcher or administrator), or has a strong commitment to, and interest in,
the development of teaching and learning in higher education.
Meetings
The Forum had
its first meetings at the University of Johannesburg in 2014 and 2015. Subsequent
meetings have been held at the University of Namibia in 2015 and the University
of Botswana in 2016. The forum continues to grow in strength and in 2016 it was
attended by 45 colleagues from across Southern Africa. The next meeting will
take the form of a conference. This will be hosted by the Eduardo Mondlane
University in February 2018.
Research
In 2015 the
Forum began a research project: Rurality in Higher Education in Southern
Africa.
